Self Healing Concrete

Self Healing Materials is a new research area that gets a lot of attention in recent years. Self Healing Concrete is a term that is used for cement-based materials that repair themselves after the material or structure gets damaged due to some sort of deterioration mechanism.

In this blog we will update you on the progress of the Self Healing Concrete projects running in the section Materials & Environment and the Microlab of the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University.

This blog contains a description of the running projects that are financed by AgentschapNL, DCMat, STW and industrial partners. Also a page "Literature & Videos" is included where a lot of publications can be found.

AWARD for Bacterial Concrete

Yesterday the Bacterial Concrete won an AWARD of the Imagine School Competition.
4 High-school students (Jeroen Goedhart, Ruben Boelens, Stijn Jagers op Akkerhuis, Roel Oldenkamp)
from R.S.G Pantarijn in Wageningen performed a research project under supervision of Virginie and Henk to develop a special Self Healing Bacterial Concrete to be used in Ecuador for concrete water irrigation systems.

The award consists of flight tickets for the research team to visit the site in Ecuador and inspect the construction of the irrigation system.

The photo below is taken during the presentation of the project by the students and shows why self healing concrete is needed.

Lupita will give Seminar on Self Healing in Mexico.
